The hub connection between the steering linkage and the steering gear is the pitman arm. It converts the rotation of the steering box into the lateral motion required for wheel rotation. Here, failure is not only inconvenient, but also dangerous. Therefore, the materials and production technology used are crucial.

For parts like the pitman arm, forging provides unparalleled mechanical strength. Forging refines the grain structure by colliding or squeezing the metal under the action of high temperature and force, so that the material fibers are arranged neatly, and products with excellent fatigue resistance and impact strength are manufactured. In short, forging strengthens the most important part under repeated dynamic loads.

At Ningbo Shengfa Hardware Factory, we use alloy steel grade 45 steel and 42CrMo hot forging steel to make clamp arm. These materials are known for reaching a compromise between machinability and toughness. Each part is heat treated after forging to maximize hardness and ductility, and then key features such as taper holes and splines are accurately numerically controlled.


Real-World Engineering: Going Beyond OE Limitations


Our forged pitman arm is upgraded on OEM models, which is one of the reasons why customers choose us. The initial design tends to prioritize cost-effectiveness rather than long-term robustness. Our engineering team uses failure analysis and reverse engineering to identify typical problems such as dimensional imbalances, corrosion-prone surfaces, and premature wear.


Where needed, we redesign. In some applications, this requires changing the geometry to improve clearances and hinges, or thickening the material at high stress locations. We can improve the design of commercial trucks to support larger loads. We can also create pitman arms with improved travel angles and added strength to withstand the rough use of lifting kits or for 4x4 or off-road applications.


Modern software tools such as CAD simulation, finite element analysis (FEA) and 3D scanning support this. This ensures that the final product is purposeful in addition to being more powerful.


Coating, Corrosion Resistance, and Testing


The pitman arms are often affected by water, mud, salt and debris as they are located in exposed positions under the chassis. Erosion is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also compromises safety and mechanical fit. That's why we use corrosion-resistant coatings as a normal procedure.


According to the customer's needs, we offer the choice of custom coatings, black oxide, e-coating (electrophoretic coating) and zinc plating. These coatings increase the service life of the arm even in harsh weather conditions or off-road use.


In order to ensure that the coating meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM B117, we conducted a salt spray test. In order to confirm the mechanical integrity of each product, our internal QC team also carried out load-bearing tests, spline accuracy verification, dimensional inspection and surface hardness tests.


We can also use double-layer protection, combining plating with polymer topcoats for areas with high road salt or critical applications.
